Five years ago, I was contacted by a Taiwanese businessman who asked if I would be interested in collaborating on a resort project in Guguan. Having never been to Guguan, I had no concept of what such a resort would look like. However, upon visiting the region, I discovered what a treasure trove it was.
Guguan's location, natural environment, and culture are rich in qualities that are both attractive and distinctively local. But it was the quality and volume of the area's hot spring waters in which I saw the most potential. There is no hot spring establishment in Japan of comparable capacity that has access to such a large volume of hot spring water.
Immediately, we decided that the central theme of this project would be to create a resort that caters to hot spring lovers. A few establishments in Japan already offer premier rooms furnished with outdoor baths. So we aimed for something more ambitious: a continuously supplied hot spring bath in every room.
As the project progressed, we added Japanese-style bath halls, a Taiwanese spa, a pool situated in the middle of a water garden, and other spaces that we designed to interplay with the natural terrain. I am confident that the resort will eventually become one of Taiwan's top resorts--and that is why I have branded it with our HOSHINOYA flagship luxury brand.
