竹富島のこと

      竹富島と星のや

      重要伝統的建造物群保存地区。市町村は伝統的な町並みの風景を保存するために、保存地区を選定し、その中でも、国が特別に文化的価値が高いと認めると、この保存地区に選定されます。全国に91区、沖縄には2区あり、そのひとつが竹富島の居住エリア。さらに、島全体の歴史的景観だけではなく、島民が大切にしてきた生活文化も保存されているのが竹富島の特徴です。

      竹富島には、約360人が島の伝統文化を守りながら暮らしています。その舞台となるお祭りは、年に20ほどあり、秋には、10日間つづく「種子取祭(たねどりさい)」は島最大のイベントとなります。全島民に参加が期待されており、各人に役割や準備の担当があります。毎年、長い準備期間を経て実施されるこのお祭りは、島の伝統を守っていこう、という強い意志の象徴でもあるのです。
      竹富島を最初に訪れたのは2005年。そこから紆余曲折を経て「星のや竹富島」をつくることになるまで、島民の皆さんと数多くの議論を行ってきました。このプロセスで、とても大切なことに気づきました。主張がどんなに激しく対立しても、最後は仲間として一緒にやっていくということです。ここは、昼間に喧嘩別れしても、夜には祭りの準備で一緒に話し、助け合わなければならない島なのです。

      「星のや竹富島」は、そういう島で長い時間をかけて計画してきました。当然ながらその建物は保存地区のマニュアルを踏襲しています。厳しい規制ではありますが、魅力の障害として捉えてはいません。むしろ竹富島の魅力そのものであると考えています。沖縄の文化を満喫する旅、離島の集落で住人になったかのような滞在、これこそが星のや竹富島に大切な要素だと考えているのです。
